Cubs Sweep Pirates
Now that's National League baseball. Behind a strong performance from Jason Marquis (seven innings, five hits, no runs, three K's), the Cubs topped the Pirates 2-0 to sweep the series. The Cubs played small ball in the seventh to score their runs: Reed Johnson scored on a Ronny Cedeno groundout and Mark DeRosa scored on a suicide squeeze by Henry Blanco. The Cubs finished the season series with Pittsburgh, going 14-4 against the hapless Pirates. From the Tao of Lou: "This was a very well-played game basically on both sides. Our pitching today was the story." Things get a bit tougher for the North Siders today, though: they return home to play Pennsylvania's other team, the Phillies, who are knee-deep in a pennant race in the NL East. Ryan Dempster gets the start for the Cubs.

Sox Fall To Orioles
It was a rough night for the White Sox pitching as the Orioles roughed up John Danks and Lance Broadway en route to an 11-3 victory over the Sox. Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye both homered for the Sox, but those two solo shots were just about all the Sox offense could muster. Said manager Ozzie Guillen, "John did not throw the ball the way we have seen him throw the ball. Those kind of days, you wish it would be a different way. I always say pitchers dictate how we play the game. Unfortunately, we did not bring anything to the ballgame." Things don't get much easier as the Pale Hose head up the coast for a series in Boston after an off-day on Thursday.
