While the stock market melted down yesterday, Highland Park-based Solo Cup Company announced that it was closing it's Highland Park manufacturing facility, shifting production to seven other U.S. plants, including downstate Urbana and its southside plant, which employs about 1,000 people.

“Increased efficiency and investment in state-of-the-art equipment are critical to being competitive in our industry and to positioning the company for growth, especially in the current economic climate,” said Solo president and CEO Robert M. Korzenski. The company also announced that they are moving to a new corporate headquarters in Lake Forest. "While Highland Park never likes to see any of its businesses close or relocate outside the community, the city looks forward to working with the new property owner to develop an alternative use that is compatible with the community and positive for the city's tax base," Highland Park Mayor Michael Belsky told CBS2.

Highland Park workers will get first priority if they apply for jobs at the other facilities.
