Sexy Sébastien

Ah those French can be so incestuous. Sébastien Tellier's first big tour was with sonic brethren Air, and his latest disc Sexuality was produced by sonic opposite Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk. Tellier creates frothy compositions that at times just barely hold on to terrestrial grounding, constantly threatening to gently rise into the upper reaches of the atmosphere.
Sexuality breaks no real new ground for Tellier, and we appreciate the straightforward honesty employed in the naming of this album, since it is all about sensual textures and intimate touches. Some percussive elements come across as gently pulsating steamworks and others are merely female moans on the verge of (or deep within?) the clutches of ecstasy. It's perfect earphone music, and could become the Barry White of the generation of computer sexual s(t)imulation.
Tellier makes a rare U.S. appearance tonight at Schubas and we admit we're not entirely sure what to expect. On one hand, it could just be an evening of gently billowing movements providing pillows for brains and ears, creating a bucolic environment lulling the audience into the aural equivalent of a warm bath. Or, if the elements all come together correctly, and the albums bassier elements are brought to the fore, Schubas could turn into a sweatbox with pheromone addled couples humping each other against the walls. Either way, we're going to be there to find out.
Sébastien Tellier plays tonight with Hey Champ opening, December 9 at Schubas, 3159 N Southport, 9 p.m., $18, 18+
