The Blackhawks got off to a sluggish start Wednesday in their 2-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues. A man short for most of the first, Chicago generated only three shots on goal in the period. St. Louis did 13 better, and scored the eventual game winner on a Jeff Woywitka slap shot in the closing minutes. Chicago picked it up offensively in the second and third, but to no avail. Dustin Byfuglien couldn't connect on a couple of golden crossing passes from Martin Havlat, and the puck was whistled dead just before Matt Walker poked it away from goalie Chris Mason and into the net for the would-be tying score. The Blues' Keith Tkachuk iced it with backhand goal in the third. The Blackhawks now vacate the UC for eight straight games on the road.

College Basketball
Northwestern stunned East Lansing with a 70-63 win over the no. 7 Michigan State Spartans. The Wildcats' Kevin Coble seemed unstoppable, single-handedly outscoring the Spartans 9-2 in a five minute stretch of the second half and totaling 31 points in the contest. The Spartans briefly seized the lead with 7:25 to play, but Craig Moore and Michael Thompson sank back-to-back daggers from behind the arc to regain command. Entering the contest, Michigan State had won 28 consecutive games at the Breslin Center, the third-longest home winning streak in the nation.
