These Virgins Know Their Moves

2009_01_the_virgins.jpg The RAC remix of The Virgins' "Rich Girls" has held a steady spot in our DJ set-list in recent months but we must admit their debut went by unheard. We made the mistake of assuming that the band probably put their all into that single tune and couldn't sustain it's poptasticness over an entire album.

Whoops. Our bad.

From the initial clatter that opens up their self-titled debut with the permanent adhesive hooks of "She's Expensive" we were hooked. The disc's bouncing choruses conjure up dance floors lit by below. Every track makes us want to map out coordinated group moves to out of Saturday Night Fever if it was set in 2028. It's like Duran Duran meets the Strokes. It's like a mouthful of cotton candy that delays reality and refused to dissolve in your mouth, sustaining the pleasure past the breaking point.

We would be more than happy to call this our guiltiest pleasure of the moment, but there is zero to feel guilty about. The band plays Schubas this Thursday and apparently there are more than a few folks who share our own high opinion of this group since we're told the show is just about sold out. Good, that means the ensuing rock and/or roll dance party that night will be outta control.

The Virgins play Thursday, January 29 at Schubas, 3159 N Southport, 9 p.m., $10, 18+
