Pencil This In: Fat Tuesday Music Edition

By Tankboy in Arts & Entertainment on Feb 24, 2009 9:15PM

There's never a shortage of events going on in Chicago on Fat Tuesday, but we decided to highlight two shows from opposite ends of the musical spectrum that accompany the spirit of the holiday without falling into cliche.

Funk
2009_02_fat_tuesday.jpg Meters' supergroup cover band The Sophisticated Cissies is comprised of musicians from a host of local bands including Bumpus, Chicago Afrobeat Project, The HUE, JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound, 56 Hope Road, This is Me Smiling, The Low Down Brass Band, and Marvin Tate. Whew! They're all coming together tonight at Schubas to perform what promises to be an electrifying set of Southern drenched soul with proceeds from the party going to benefit the New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village Project.
Schubas, 3159 N Southport, 8 p.m., $5, 21+

Rock
Local H plays Mother's for a wholly different Fat Tuesday experience. You can probably expect a fair amount of beaded necklaces dotting the attendees but the focus will be on the stage as the Chicago power-duo pounds out hits ranging from the average Rush-street party goers junior high years through the band's excellent 12 Angry Months album from last year.
Mother's, 26 W Division, 8 p.m., $10, 21+
