Schooled By Steinski

2009_02_steinski.jpg Gregg Gillis owes Steinski his career. Hell, most producers owe Steinski an awful lot for the aural aesthetic he and partner Double Dee helped cement when it came to cutting and splicing source tracks to create new murals of sound.

Their debut, "Lesson One -- The Payoff Mix", slammed into the scene earning them first prize in the Tommy Boy "Play That Beat, Mr. D.J." remix contest of 1983, awarded by a panel of legendary judges Afrika Bambaataa, Shep Pettibone, and Jellybean Benitez. As the years progressed the duo split but Steinski continued, and continues, to push the boundaries by creating ever more inventive sound collages including the spooky and meditative tribute to 9/11 victims, "Number Three on Flight Eleven."

Steinski plays a rare Chicago set at Darkroom tonight and while we could spend paragraphs extolling the man's virtues, why don't we let the music speak for itself?
