Gas Leak Forces Evacuation of U of C Dorm

The air is beginning to clear again after 150 University of Chicago students were evacuated from their dormitory after high levels of carbon monoxide, about 400 parts per million, were detected in the basement earlier this afternoon.
Responding firefighters immediately initiated a Level I Hazardous Materials Response, and decided to evacuate the building. Crews shut down the building’s boiler and levels had begun to decrease. One person was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not listed as serious.
As soon as the source of the gas leak is found, students will be able to return to their dorm. [S-T]
