Cody Hudson at Andrew Rafacz Gallery

2009_03_CODYHUDSON.jpg There’s something about multimedia artist / designer Cody Hudson that makes us just want to have a beer with him. Maybe it’s the symmetrical chaos of his work—complex, but approachable. Or maybe it’s his love of Wisconsin cheese curds. Actually, the name of his upcoming show at Andrew Rafacz Gallery may have something to do with it—thanks man, see you around man, fuck yeah, you guys are wild, thanks man, i dig it, see you.

As a successful commercial designer (under the moniker Struggle Inc.), Hudson’s client roster is
impressive—designs for Burton snowboards, record covers for Chocolate Industries, prints for Stussy clothing, and the list goes on. Hudson’s personal art is just as varied. Drawings and paintings of delicate lines and repetitive, symmetrical patterns in translucent colors mesmerize like a turning kaleidoscope. And sculptured installations of layered wooden boards, like this one, remind us of a sunny day at the skate park with The Partridge Family.

Expect to see fresh new paintings, drawings, and an installation at Hudson’s show, which opens March 27 and runs thru April 9. And keep an eye out for his upcoming large-scale installation that will comprise two floors of the Hyde Park Art Center.
