Getz Picked by Sox

2009_03_chris_getz.jpg When the White Sox opened camp last month, there were a number of positions that remained unfilled, with numerous players to compete for the starting jobs in center field, at second base and in the starting rotation.

With about two weeks until Opening Day, Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen has decided on at least one of the spots. Guillen named Chris Getz the staring second baseman, beating out Gordon Beckham, Brent Lillibridge and Jayson Nix. With 40 spring training at-bats under his belt, Getz is hitting .350 with one home run and 7 RBIs. Lillibridge is the favorite to win a utility man position because of his versitility, while highly touted prospect Beckham will start at Triple A Charlotte to get more experience.

In center field -- the other position with an ongoing battle -- Guillen has decided to go with a platoon. Against left handed pitchers, Brian Anderson will play center and bat lead-off. Jerry Owens and Dewayne Wise are competing to fill those same roles against righties.
