Daley on Sanchez Scandal: "I'm Sorry"

By Marcus Gilmer in News on Mar 25, 2009 3:00PM

Leave it Mayor Daley to "apologize" without it sounding the least bit sincere. With the International Olympic Committee's final site visit a week away, and all kinds of other problems plaguing him, Daley apologized yesterday for the Al Sanchez hiring scandal, saying, "I want to say to the people of Chicago that I understand this is a disappointment. For that, I am sorry."

Daley promised the problem was getting better, saying, "There's been progress all over," while refusing to answer questions as to whether or not he knew about the practices taking place right under his nose. He also refused to answer questions about the possible involvement his brother William may have had in creating of the Hispanic Democratic Organization, the "pro-Daley patronage army" that most benefited from this scandal. Always one to leave reporters fuming, Daley left the podium and spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard said, "You can do with his not answering your questions whatever you will." [WBBM]
