Cubs Help Yankees Christen New Yankee Stadium

By Marcus Gilmer in News on Apr 4, 2009 3:45PM

The Chicago Cubs have already fled the warm climate of Arizona for the spring and before they head to Houston to open the season on Monday, they made a weekend stop-over in the Big Apple. The reason? The Cubs were specially chosen to help the Yankees christen their new stadium in a pair of exhibition games before the season got into full swing. And judging by what we could see on television, the new Yankee Stadium looks a whole lot like the old one. Of course, we hear it's pretty posh on the concourse.

Last night, the Yankees were too much for the Cubs, overpowering the North Siders 7-4. Aaron Miles provided the spark for the Cubs offensively, going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs. Unfortunately, Ted Lily had a pretty nasty day on the mound, giving up eight hits and seven runs in just four innings of work. Sure, it's still Spring Training, technically, but it's enough to give us pause just a few sunrises away from Opening Day.

The Cubs and Yankees play again today at high noon Chicago time, and then it's down to Houston for the Cubs, where they'll work out tomorrow and then open the season Monday afternoon against the Astros.
