Daleys Release Personal Tax Info

According to the tax return released Friday by the mayor’s office, Mayor Daley’s family income dropped from $238,190 in 2007, to $183,992 in 2008, about half the income reported for '06. The decrease can be attributed in part to the mayor being the sole breadwinner since Maggie Daley did not hold a paid job in 2008.

The mayor’s budgeted salary of about $216,210 was also decreased because he took six voluntary furlough days. Daley had issued an edict requiring all non-union underlings to take unpaid days off, but the mayor did not take his furlough days until the Tribune noted in August that he and most aldermen were not sharing in the hardship.

The Daley family's 2006 income was thanks to an investment windfall and Mrs. Daley’s six-figure consulting job for the Academy of Achievement , a Washington-based non-profit. In 2007 Mrs. Daley cut her ties with the organization for “health reasons” said Daley spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard.

Last month, the mayor's office acknowledged the Daley’s took multiple trips aboard a $31 million private jet belonging to another non-profit that provides funding for the Academy of Achievement . The Daley’s maintain they have no tax obligation from the trips they took because the mayor worked some official duties into the trips while Maggie Daley traveled in her official capacity.

According to WBBM, Heard was asked whether Maggie Daley’s decision to sever her ties to the Academy of Achievement had anything to do with the investigation launched by the IRS of EduCap. “I don’t believe so. But I don’t know,” she said. [Tribune, WBBM]
