I Fight Dragons touts themselves as some sort of nerd-centric NES-influenced dork combo. For this reason we have actually avoided them, figuring we'd leave them to the folks who dig Liam Lynch on repeat and collect Cartoon Network soundtracks. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, it just ain't our thing.

Well, I Fight Dragons just kept popping up in our Twitter stream -- again, not exactly an endorsement -- and we figured that since their debut EP was being offered as a free download we may as well give 'em a spin.

WHOAH! What came through our headphones was not what we expected. Instead of a bunch of dork-rock with comic book lyrics we were attacked by bright shiny gleaming and accomplished power pop. The band is far more Wannadies than Nintendo-core. We're not exactly sure why the band insists on mis-marketing themselves since we reckon they could attract much larger crowds to their shows if they were just honest and dropped the gimmicks. Maybe they don't care? Maybe they just know that as long as their music gets out there it's gonna ensnare whatever's in its path?

The debut EP is available for free if you sign up for their mailing list. Take our addvice, give 'em your email, and enjoy the music. If you've only got time for one track we suggest firing up the adrenaline rush of "Heads Up, Hearts Down."
