Jays Dismantle Sox
The Chicago White Sox fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 14-0 Friday night, as grinderball met thunderbat. The Jays combined for 21 hits off Chicago’s pitching staff, with starter Gavin Floyd surrendering six runs, nine hits and five walks over 4.1 innings. Jack Egbert was summoned from the ‘pen to stop the bleeding, but only made matters worse, coughing up another six runs and seven hits in less than two innings of work. Shortstop Alexi Ramirez, who erred on a double-play ball in the first, elicited groans from the fans all night as he struggled to cleanly field his position. While the Blue Jays were slugging away, the Sox did little at the plate to counter, tallying only six hits in the ballgame. Chris Getz and Brian Anderson had two apiece, with Anderson recording the only extra-bagger for the Sox. Mark Buehrle will look to turn things around when he takes the mound in game two tonight at 6:05.

Cards Edge Cubs
The Chicago Cubs’ 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals may have been the least of their worries on Friday, as both Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Marmol exited the game with injuries. Ramirez strained his calf while running the bases in the second inning, and was lifted before the Cubs took the field in the fifth. That just so happened to be the side when St. Louis got to starter Ryan Dempster, scoring three runs on a walk and three hits. Chicago would answer with a three-run rally in the seventh, but it could have been a much bigger inning as the Cubs had bases loaded with no outs and two runs already across. The final blow came in the eighth, when Albert Pujols stole second on Marmol and Ryan Ludwick singled him home for the game-winning run. Somewhere in that sequence Marmol strained his left knee, and was removed from the game after showing signs of pain. Both Marmol and Ramirez will be evaluated today, hoping to avoid trips to the D.L. The Cubs step to the plate at 3:10 this afternoon, looking to put a stop to their three-game skid.
