Sox Tame Tigers
Mark Buehrle pitched a one-hit, eight-inning gem as the White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-0 on Thursday. Backed up by a five-run first inning, Buehrle threw six perfect frames before allowing a hit and two walks in the seventh. Buehrle escaped the bases-loaded jam and rebounded with a 1-2-3 eighth, as Bobby Jenks came in to close it out in the ninth. At the plate, the Sox didn't look particularly threatening in the bottom of the first with Chris Getz standing on second and two out, but Detroit starter Armando Galarraga quickly came undone. Galarraga walked Jim Thome, surrendered an RBI single to Jermaine Dye, a two-run double to Paul Konerko and a subsequent two-run homer to A.J. Pierzynski. Jayson Nix would tack on a solo shot in the fourth, as the White Sox waltzed to victory. The one-game series "sweep" puts Chicago within a win of .500, a mark they hope to obtain tonight against the Texas Rangers.
Cubs Roll Astros
The surging Chicago Cubs used a four-run ninth inning to ensure success against the Astros Thursday night, as they defeated Houston 8-5. Ted Lilly allowed two runs to score in a worrisome first frame but soon found his rhythm, ultimately turning in a six-inning quality start for the Cubs. Alfonso Soriano was the star at the dish, hitting homers in both the fourth and ninth innings and adding three runs to Chicago's total. The Cubs also got big contributions from Aramis Ramirez, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and despite a hitless evening, two RBIs from Mike Fontenot. Recent call-up Chad Fox was handed the ball in the bottom of the ninth with a six-run lead, but did not last long as he gave up a walk and two triples while recording only one out. Kevin Gregg stepped in to stop the Houson rally, and Chicago held on for back-to-back wins against the 'Stros. The Cubs travel to Milwaukee for a three-game series versus the Brew Crew, starting tonight at 7:05.
