Pontiak's Din Descends On Chicago

2009_05_pontiak.jpg Pontiak is heavy psychedelia powered by the sibling power-trio of Van, Lain, and Jennings Carney. On their latest disc, Maker, they combine caterwauling instrumental freak-outs with heavy blues sing-alongs backed by the choirs of the damned. This is the sort of music hellbent on destroying your hearing because you just won't be able to turn it up loud enough. This is music made for wild-eyed mountain men taking it cues from both backwoods foot stompers and desert dry stoner riffs.

Think of what would happen if Queens Of the Stone Age mated with The Meat Puppets and the twisted offspring would sound a lot like Pontiak as it scratched and clawed at its instruments. Granted, compared to the beauty of Pontiak's attack that's a somewhat crude comparison, but it does give you some idea of the expanse occupied by these brothers.

The group will do its best to deafen a three block radius on Western this evening when they play a free show at The Empty Bottle.

Pontiak plays with Thrones and Helen Money tonight, May 11, at The Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western, 9:30 p.m., FREE, 21+
