Padres, Peavy Blank Cubs
The Cubs recent woes continued in San Diego on Friday, as they lost the series opener to the Padres 4-0. Content California resident Jake Peavy laid down six innings of two-hit, shutout baseball, striking out ten and walking four. His counterpart, Carlos Zambrano, lasted only 4.2 innings and surrendered three runs in his first start back from the D.L. Still nothing doing for the Cubs on offense, as they were shutout for the second time this week. Chicago’s one through four hitters each recorded a base knock in the contest, and Kosuke Fukudome demonstrated patience at the plate by drawing three bases-on-balls. Otherwise, it was Peavy’s night. Randy Wells will start in place of Rich Harden tonight, who is visiting the 15-day D.L. with a mild back strain.
Sox Stifle Pirates
The White Sox reversed their fortunes Friday night with a quick 2-0 victory over the Pittsburg Pirates. Only a day after surrendering 20 runs to the Minnesota Twins, the Sox rebounded behind Gavin Floyd’s eight-inning, two-hit performance to win a pitchers’ duel at the Cell. Floyd bested Pittsburg’s Zach Duke, who threw a complete game six hitter, en route to his third W of the season. In terms of offense, Scott Podsednik picked up the winning RBI in the third inning when he grounded out to second base, allowing Alexei Ramirez to advance 90 feet and score. Ramirez then crossed the plate again in the eighth as he launched a solo shot deep to left, giving closer Bobby Jenks some breathing room. With an official time of 1:51, it marked the shortest non-Buehrle game for the Sox since April 16, 2006 (perhaps they wanted to catch the end of the 'Hawks game). After the contest, manager Ozzie Guillen announced that he will be away from the team over the weekend to be with his ill father-in-law. The Sox and Pirates do it again at 6:05 tonight.
