Morning Box Score: Sox Drop A's

The White Sox pulled back to .500 with a 6-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday. Matt Holliday gave the A’s a two-run lead in the first when he homered to deep left field and then prevented a tie in the bottom of the inning by robbing Paul Konerko of a solo shot. Chicago would eventually get that second run when A.J. Pierzynski put one over the fence and well out of reach in the fifth, and Dewayne Wise did his best Holliday impression in the six to prevent an extra-bagger by Jack Cust and keep the game tied. It was Jim Thome that broke the deadlock, setting off the fireworks in the eighth inning with a three-run blast to left-center. The A’s Kevin Cameron then walked in Chicago’s sixth and final run before Scott Linebrink came in to close the door in the ninth. Matt Thornton got the win with one inning of relief, but it was Sox starter Gavin Floyd who deserved the most praise on the mound. Floyd pitched seven impressive innings, allowing only the two-run homer by Holliday and three additional hits by Oakland, while striking out eight. Coming off their fourth consecutive victory, the Sox will try to take it to the A’s again at 7:11 tonight.
