Cubs Edge Braves
The Cubs and the Braves required extra innings again on Wednesday night, but this time it was Chicago who came out on top, 3-2 in 11. With Ted Lilly cruising on the mound, it appeared the Cubs got all the runs they would need when Mike Fontenot drove home Ryan Theriot and Kosuke Fukudome on a double in the fourth. Lilly, who had only surrendered one hit and one walk through five frames, finally faltered in the sixth, allowing four hits in the inning and one Braves' run to come across. In the seventh, Lilly committed a throwing error on a ball hit by Gregor Blanco, setting the table for Chipper Jones' RBI double. With the score knotted at two, Carlos Marmol and Angel Guzman combined for four innings of one-hit relief, buying time for Micah Hoffpauir to slap an RBI single to left and give the Cubs the go-ahead run in the eleventh. Kevin Gregg picked up the save with a 1-2-3 ninth, and Chicago won its first road game since May 10. The Cubs will try to take the series when they pitch Carlos Zambrano tonight in Atlanta. Milton Bradley remains sidelined with a strained right calf.

A's Best Sox
The Sox lost game three of their four-game series versus the Oakland Athletics Wednesday by the score of 5-3. Jermaine Dye gave Chicago the early advantage, driving a two-run shot over the center-field wall in the opening inning of the contest. Sox starter Clayton Richard had trouble holding down the fort, though, allowing two runs in the second and another pair in the fourth, as Oakland jumped ahead 4-2. The Sox picked up a third score in the bottom of the fourth on a ground out by Brian Anderson, but the A's would manage to stretch their lead when Jason Giambi hit a solo shot off Richard in the fifth. Oakland lifted starter Josh Outman after six and two-thirds, and Chicago couldn't crack the 'pen as they went down quietly in the final two innings. It was the first loss for Richard in five starts this season, having allowed only four total runs in his previous three outings. The Sox will look to split the series tonight with the help of Gordon Beckham, who got the call late Wednesday.
