Cubs Outlast Reds
The Cubs played the fourth extra-inning game in their last five contests on Sunday, this time defeating the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 in 14 frames. Chicago established an early 3-1 lead thanks to a solo homer from Ryan Theriot in the first and a two-RBI double off the bat of Derrek Lee in the third. The Reds made it 3-2 with a single, double and sacrifice fly in the seventh, ending Randy Wells' day after 6.2 effective innings on the mound. Setup man Carlos Marmol was handed the ball in the eighth but he didn't stick around for long, getting the hook after walking the first two batters he faced. Cincinnati then capitalized with a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to tie the game at three and force five innings of bonus baseball. The Cubs put runners in scoring position in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and thirteenth innings, but couldn't cash in until Alfonso Soriano's leadoff dinger in the fourteenth. Mike Fontenot and Reed Johnson would pad the lead with RBIs of their own, and Chicago claimed a hard-fought victory. The Cubs get a much needed day off before starting a three-game series in Houston on Tuesday.
Indians Sink Sox
The Cleveland Indians found success against Sox starter Bartolo Colon on Sunday, as Chicago fell by the score of 8-4. Over five arduous innings Colon surrendered six runs on eight hits, which included four solo home runs. Trying to dig out of a 6-0 hole, the Sox posted three in the fifth when Alexei Ramirez plated Brian Anderson and Scott Podsednik with a big fly to left. The South Siders didn't stay within striking distance for long, though, as relievers Wes Whisler and D.J. Carrasco combined to give back two in the top of the sixth. Continuing to fight, Chicago loaded the bases in the eighth with no one retired, but could only pick up a run as Brian Anderson, Jayson Nix and Gordon Beckham each recorded unproductive outs. With his 0-for-4 performance yesterday, Beckham remains hitless through his first three big-league contests. Meanwhile, veteran Scott Podsednik extended his modest hitting streak to six games. The Sox stay put to host five games with the Detroit Tigers, beginning with a double header today at 1:05 and 7:11.
