Cubs Clobber 'Stros
The Cubs got off to a hot start against the Houston Astros Tuesday night, laying claim to a 7-1 victory. Kosuke Fukudome busted a three-game slump at the plate with a ground-rule, RBI double in the first, followed by run-scoring singles from Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto. Ted Lilly helped his own cause with a leadoff triple to begin the second and would become run number four for Chicago thanks to a subsequent throwing error by the 'Stros. Then in the third, birthday-boy Mike Fontenot hit his sixth homer of the season to put the Cubs up five, en route to a 4-for-5 day at the dish. The five spot proved to be more than enough support for Lilly, who turned in 6.2 innings of three-hit, shutout baseball. Chicago would tack on two more in the sixth for good measure thanks to a ground-rule double from Andres Blanco. The Cubs can take their second straight road series with a win tonight behind Carlos Zambrano.
Sox Fall to Tigers
It was an extra-disappointing loss for the White Sox on Tuesday, as they succumbed to the Detroit Tigers 7-6 in 10 innings. Miguel Cabrera spoiled the party two pitches into the bonus frame when he lauched a Scott Linebrink fastball over the fence in left center, quickly negating Chicago's three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. The Sox had almost won it outright but Dewayne Wise was called out at plate, trying to score on Paul Konerko's clutch bases-clearing double. The Sox's first run of the game came on a wild pitch in the opening inning and Brian Anderson provided two more in the fifth with a big fly off Dontrelle Willis. Starter Mark Buerhle kept his club in the mix of 3-3 ballgame through six innings, but left runners on second and third for Octavio Dotel, who promptly surrendered a walk and a three-run double. Rookie Gordon Beckham got off the schneid with his first big-league base hit on a looper to right center in the second inning, ending his 0-for-13 start. The White Sox and John Danks will try to undo yesterday's loss when they match up against Detroit-ace Justin Verlander at 7:11 this evening.
