Cubs Rally Past Twins
Ryan Theriot's walk-off single gave the Cubs a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday and prevented the series sweep. Derrek Lee started the rally with a one-out single and then legged his way to third on Geovany Soto's knock to left. The Twins then walked Mike Fontenot to get to the right-handed hitting Theriot, who made his second RBI of the day a game winner. On the hill Ted Lilly turned in another fine performance, grinding out 7.2 quality innings. Carlos Gomez was the only thorn in Lilly's side, as Gomez doubled, stole third and scored in the second inning, and then deposited a hanging slider over the wall in left center to tie the game at two in the sixth. Soto picked up the Cubs' other RBI, plating Milton Bradley in the fourth en route to a 3-for-4 day at the dish. The win stopped a four-game skid, and will give the club some confidence heading into Tuesday's opener with the Sox.
Sox Edge Brewers
A.J. Pierzynski was the difference maker in Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, as the Chicago catcher singled home the winning run in the top of the ninth to give the Sox a 5-4 victory. Pierzynski, who finished the day with three hits, couldn't resist the 3-0 pitch from Trevor Hoffman, saddling the star closer with his first earned run in 19 appearances this season. Mark Buehrle kick started Chicago's offense in the third with his first career homer, but unfortunately repaid the favor three-fold, as the Brewers hit solo shots off Buehrle in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Gordon Beckham made a big impact in the Sox's fourth when his two-run double gave Chicago a 3-2 lead, and Scott Podsednik added to the advantage with a subsequent RBI single. The bullpen looked to be back in top form, as Jimmy Gobble, Octavio Dotel, Matt Thorton and Bobby Jenks combined to allow just one baserunner in three key innings of relief. The Sox get a day of rest before travelling across town to face the Cubs on Tuesday.
