Chicago Police answered a call of a break-in at Whittier Elementary School early this morning and discovered a pair of boys, 13 and 14 years old, inside. The 14-year-old then allegedly pointed a gun at police who shot the boy in the leg. According to reports, the boy did not fire on police and the other teen did not have a weapon. Per the Sun-Times:

Both boys fled the school after the shooting, but police were able to find the younger boy who told officers where the older one lived. The older boy was then arrested near the intersection of West Cullerton Street and South Damen Avenue while he may have been attempting to get to a hospital in a vehicle driven by someone else, police said.

The 14-year-old was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in an unidentified condition, police said.

The firearm was recovered and no charges have been filed as of 7:30 a.m.

Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond said there were no scheduled summer classes at the school and an investigation into the incident was ongoing. "We will rely on the Independent Police Review Authority to conduct its investigation. CPS Safety and Security is also investigating."
