In Pictures: Pierogi Fest

A few things we learned over the weekend:

  • It's only an hour by bike from our home in Bridgeport to Whiting, IN
  • Indianapolis Blvd, with its wide lanes, is safe to bike. Safer than Clark Street, Ridge Ave. or the north side of the lakefront path
  • Pierogis do not make a good fuel for biking back.
  • If you're a fan of neighborhood carnivals, you'll be a fan of Pierogi Fest in short order.

Developed a nice case of farmer tan Saturday hanging out at Pierogi Fest, sampling a good couple dozen of the little buggers in all sorts of flavors, including an execrable taco pierogi that was fried in butter until petrified. A large part of Pierogi Fest's charm lies in Whiting itself. 119th Street became a carnival thoroughfare that amplified Whiting's small-town charm. Or at least as charming as a small town that shares a state line with the third-largest city in the country can be. there were the frequent parades with kids dressed as mushrooms and dumplings, Mr. Pierogi and Ms. Paczki walked around taking pictures with any and everyone. Other food kiosks offered noshables ranging from Chinese food and kabobs to barbeque and wild game burgers.
