Yanks Spoil Sox Shot At Sweep
The White Sox fell just short of a four-game sweep when they lost to the New York Yankees Sunday, 8-5. Starter Mark Buehrle found trouble in the second inning when he surrendered a three-run homer to Melky Cabrera, but the Sox answered with a couple long balls of their own as Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome helped Chicago to a four-run third. The Yankees' bats would not be denied, however, sending Buehrle to the showers after he permitted a pair of runs to score in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the meantime, New York's Cabrera was busy hitting through the cycle, with the always-elusive triple coming in the ninth on a misjudged ball by Dye in right. The Sox get a day of rest before hosting the Angels on Tuesday.
Marlins Catch Cubs
The Cubs dropped game three of their series with Florida last night, as this time the Marlins' late-inning heroics handed Chicago a 3-2 defeat. Derrek Lee and Cody Ross each put a run on the board for their respective teams, but Jake Fox's ninth-inning solo shot tipped the scales in the Cubs' favor. The Marlins, who had found success against Kevin Gregg the night before, launched back-to-back jacks off the Cubs' closer to walk away with a stunning 3-2 victory. The blown save squandered six, three-hit, shutout innings by starter Ryan Dempster and kept the Cubs from leapfrogging St. Louis in the standings. Ryan Theriot accounted for half of the Cubs' hits, going 3-for-4 in the contest. The Cubs find themselves in Cincinnati this evening, hoping to take advantage of a Reds team that's lost six straight ballgames.
