Farmer's Market Roundup - Always Surprises

By Anthony Todd in Food on Aug 13, 2009 4:00PM

No matter how many times we go to Chicago Farmer's Markets, there is always something that surprises us. This week, we encountered a few new things: squash blossoms (which can be battered and fried), the first apples of the season, baby celery.

Also on our menu are fresh shallots, which for some reason we never realized existed. We've had fresh onions, but for some reason the connection never got made that shallots might be fresh too! They are lovely, and have a little bit less bite than the cured variety. Our pick for best item of the week - heirloom cherry tomatoes, which we're eating like candy.

Get thee to a market!
