Afternoon Box Score: Sox Dump Cubs
By Marcus Gilmer in News on Sep 3, 2009 9:40PM
The Cubs offense continued to struggle while the White Sox took advantage of some Cubs defensive miscues and walked away from Wrigley 5-0 victors in their make-up game against the North Siders. Ryan Dempster struck out seven over seven-plus innings pitched and didn't give up an earned run, but the Sox still managed to plate three unearned runs thanks to errors. The Sox got the first run in the second and a dropped fly ball by the $136 Million Man in left field during the seventh proved costly for the Cubs as it was responsible for two more runs.
Not that it mattered, really: the Cubs offense couldn't get anything going against Sox rookie pitcher Carlos Torres who notched his first career big league win thanks to seven shut out innings in which he struck out six. And the Sox offense, fresh off of yesterday's huge ninth inning comeback in Minnesota, kept the hits coming as Dewayne Wise (who made a terrific throw home in the game, pic 5 above) was the only Sox offensive starter to not contribute one of the team's 13 hits. The victory also gave the Sox the edge in the season series with their crosstown rivals by a four games to two tally. Next up for the Pale Hose is a return to The Cell where they host their Sox counterparts from Boston. Meanwhile, the Cubs hit the road on a losing note, heading to New York for a weekend series.
