Peavy Shuts Down Detroit, Gives Sox Hope For 2010
Never has the phrase "Wait til next year" had as much emphasis as it does from Sox fans today after another gem from new ace Jake Peavy. Peavy, making his third start for the Sox since the trade from San Diego and a DL stint, also earned his third win as the Sox upended Detroit 8-0, preventing Detroit from clinching the division. With the Sox, Peavy is now 3-0 in three starts with a 1.35 ERA and a 3-to-1 K-to-BB ratio. Damn. The Sox offense gave Peavy plenty of support, too, as Scott Podsednik got the game-winning run with a solo homer...in the first inning. Carlos Quentin belted a homer of his own in the fifth and added another RBI in the sixth when the Sox exploded for five runs to put the game too far out of reach. The Pale Hose keep trying to be a thorn in Detroit's side tonight at 6:05 p.m. (CSN).

Diamondbacks Destroy Cubs
It seems the 2016 shock was felt all the way up at Wrigley where a lifeless Cubs team was smacked around by the NL West's basement dweller Arizona Diamondbacks 12-3. Tom Gorzelanny's pitch for a spot on the 2010 starting rotation was as limp as Pat Ryan's pitch on Friday morning for Chicago 2016; Gorz gave up seven runs (six earned) over only three innings pitched and not many teams will overcome that deficit, let alone one as anemic as the 2009 Cubs. In their last three games, Chicago has beaten by a pair of last-place teams (Pittsburgh and Arizona) by a combined score of 25-4. Said Sweet Lou, "These teams we're playing, they're swinging the bats well and they're nice and healthy. They got their same players on the field that started the year, and we're quite the opposite. But still, that being said, there's no excuse for going out there and getting whooped on either." The Cubs try to bounce back today at 12:05 (WGN).
