T.O. to Bears? We Say B.S.

By Benjy Lipsman in News on Oct 14, 2009 2:40PM

Are the Bears interested in trading for loudmouth wide receiver Terrell Owens? That's the rumor ESPN was spreading yesterday when Adam Schefter speculated that the 1-4 Buffalo Bills may want to trade T.O. before next week's trading deadline, and their Rumors page (both ESPN Insider only) suggested he might end up with the Bears.

Even with the emergence of Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett, the team still lacks a true number one wideout, the thinking goes. No matter that new QB Jay Cutler seems to prefer throwing to his tight ends anyway. And while we agree it might help the Bears to have that true stud receiver on the roster, Owens is not the answer. He's run himself out of town in every city he's played - San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, and perhaps soon Buffalo - in spite of his skill on the field. The Bears don't need that kind of distraction in the locker room. There's a reason the Bears parted ways with the likes of Tank Johnson and Cedric Benson. And just look how Milton Bradley hurt the Cubs' chemistry this year. Adding Owens might improve the Bears on paper, but on the field? We don't think so.

Of course, that doesn't stop ChicagoNow's Top Ten Chicago Sports blog from giving us ten reasons why the Bears should make the trade. Still, with Jay Cutler in the fold, a top-ranked receiver will eventually come calling. No need to go for broke in the first six weeks of the Cutler Era.
