We are big fans of the Greek influence --- Gyros, Saganaki (ok, we know this was invented in Chicago) and ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding.’ What we didn’t think we would be so thrilled about is Greek wine.

But thank goodness a trip into Rootstock led us to this Grecian beauty and our Wine Wednesday pick, Domaine Mercouri 2001 Red.

Mecouri Estates, located in Korakohori, Ilias, Peloponessos, boasts over 150 years of family-run wine business. The Domaine Mercouri Red has nice structure a dry, light tannic finish but what is in between is full of body, earthiness and that allows it to come on smooth and linger awhile. This wine comprised of Refosco (85%) and Movrodaphne (15%) carried us happily through varied small plates, including chicken liver pate with pink peppercorns, frites, mussels and a juicy burger topped with white cheddar.

By the way, we were also very impressed that the staff could spot a flawed bottle when we were questioning if it just needed to open up. Kudos to Rootstock for knowing their wine, trusting their palate and pleasing us as customers.
