Make Last Minute Plans With Metric

Metric's show at Metro last June is on our list as one of the best of the year. The quartet delivered danceable anthems interlaced with melodramatic flourishes that expanded the songs' reach instead of hindering them. Emily Haines is a magnetic focus point for the band, but her partners in music Joules Scott-Key, James Shaw, and Josh Winstead provide a formidable backdrop for her to work off. Winstead in particular creates a strong visual foil for Haines as he swings his bass around nailing the rhythms to the floor.
Since the band sold-out Metro the last time they were in town we were a bit shocked to hear they were playing Cubby Bear this time around. But shock turned into glee at the prospect of seeing them in smaller, unfamiliar settings. Part of us is a bit worried your basic Wrigleyville crowd won't know what to make of the band, but an equal part of us is excited at the prospect of seeing Metric win them over. Either way, this is the show to catch tonight.
Metric plays tonight, December 16, at Cubby Bear, 1059 W Addison, 9 p.m., $10 / $5 with Twisted Christmas ticket stub from House of Blues, 21+
