What's Up In Deerfield?

By Marcus Gilmer in News on Jan 7, 2010 8:30PM

2009_11_04_swiper.jpg We don't know what it is - the short days, the cold, cabin fever, whatever - but our neighbors up in suburban Deerfield are scratching their heads at some random acts of vandalism. Last week a giant inflatable snowman was slashed, resulting in the homeowner requesting an additional police patrol in the neighborhood. Maybe there is an extra patrol there but someone needs to get back to the Deerfield Public Library where one thief has been stealing cans of soda to the tune of six cans a day.

Different varieties of soda have gone missing, but the thief's modus operandi has been consistent. The thefts appear to be happening just before the 9 a.m. opening of the library or sometime near the 9 p.m. closing, officials told police.

The area is locked and requires a staff-issued key, leading officials to suspect an inside job.

How do police plan to handle this caper? Deputy Police Chief Rick Wilk told the Trib, "We may put a camera in there." Here's hoping authorities are able to capture the Coca-Cola culprit so the staff can rest easy.
