Former Cubs pitching star/sure-fire Hall-of-Famer Greg Maddux is once again a Cub albeit not on the mound. Instead, Maddux will be an assistant to GM Jin Hendry and, let's face it, Hendry needs all the help he can get. According to ESPN:
Maddux will help with instruction for major leaguers and minor leaguers during spring training, and he will scout throughout the season. "I'm looking forward to working my way back into the game and am happy that the Cubs have given me the opportunity to do that," Maddux said in a statement. "I started my career with the Cubs, and Chicago has always been the best place in the league to play. I'm eager to do whatever I can to help the organization, and am looking forward to getting started at spring training."
Maddux pitched nine full seasons and one partial seasons for the Cubs over two separate stints (1986-1992, 2004-2006). He won five Gold Gloves, was a two-time All-Star, and won a Cy Young while with the Cubs but, admittedly, his peak performance stretch was with the Atlanta Braves. Maddux retired at the end of last season with a career total of 8 All-Star appearances, 4 Cy Youngs, and a mind-boggling 18 Gold Gloves won in streaks of 13- and 5-straight. Hopefully, that career success carries over into the front office.
