2010_1_uofclogo.jpg Undergraduate applications to the University of Chicago are up 42 percent over last year, making the pool of applicants the largest in the school's history. The U of C received 19,306 applications for the class entering in the fall of 2010, a 42 percent increase from last year's 13,564 applications, according to a release from the school. There were also increases in applications from minority students, in addition to all income levels and every geographic region of the U.S. and from outside the country.

The 2010 increase is just part of an academic trend that has been growing for decades, including the doubling of college applicants since 2006. University leaders said that the growth stems from more academic programs being available and enhanced student life opportunities, including U of C's new Chicago Studies program, which has created new ways for students to engage with the city. U of C has also recently completely construction on new residence halls and athletics facilities, and The Odyssey Scholarships program has also helped students by reducing loans and supplying grants for those that qualify.

"By every measure, this is a highly accomplished and diverse group of young scholars," James G. Nondorf, Vice President and Dean of College Admissions and Financial Aid, said in the release. [Chicago Sun-Times]
