Jennifer Hall and her fiance were approached by two homeless people as she was leaving the store at 1224 S. Wabash on August 25, 2008. Derrick King and Joyce Burgess asked Hall for a cigarette. When Hall said no, she was physically assaulted. The attack, which occurred on Hall's birthday, left her with serious injuries including 85 staples in her head and the loss of most of her teeth.
King pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced to three years in jail but was released on parole after 18 days, the report said.
Hall's complaint calls Jewel negligent in the matter, stating that the store allowed homeless people to loiter on the property despite knowing of their violent natures. "Such persons posed a risk to persons lawfully on said premises," the complaint said. [Chicago Breaking News]
