Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week": Reissdorf Kölsch

Didn't write much yesterday about the wine, beer and cocktail lists at the Purple Pig. That's mainly because on our visits we were discovering the crispness of Reissdorf Kölsch. The Purple Pig only serves it in 200ml kölsch glasses for $4 a serving. Trust us, it's enough.

We've been drinking a lot of kölsches lately and this beer from Cologne ranks right up there with the better ones we've tasted. It's got very nice carbonation and forms a head that leaves beautiful lacing on the class as it dissipates. The flavor is PIlsner malt, slightly sour, with some traces of minerals. For a restaurant that traffics almost exclusively in cheese, spreads and cured meats, it's a complement for nearly anything on the Purple Pig's menu.

Other local bars that carry Reissdorf Kölsch include Sheffield's, Kuma's Corner, Jake's Tap, Glunz Bavarian Haus, Quenchers and Hop Haus. Hop Haus and Glunz Bavarian Haus serve Reissdorf in 16-ounce drafts, the rest in 12-ounce bottles.
