It's prime barleywine season again and it's been a while since we looked at the style. Also we've only looked at one other beer from Avery Brewing. So this week is botha n attempt at playing catchup while revisiting a favorite style.
Avery's barleywine, Hog Heaven, is a milder interpretation of the style and great for novice barleywine enthusiasts as an introduction to high gravity beers such as barley or wheat wines. It's sweet, with a lot of caramel flavor from the malt, but with a very strong pine aroma from the hops. The head that forms when decanted is thick and long-lasting, with thick lace rings left behind on the glass. Try it with fresh stone fruits or cheesecake.
Avery Hog Heaven is available at the following bars: Cooper's (1232 W. Belmont), Risqué Café (3419 N. Clark, home of the country-fried bacon), and Small Bar Division St. (2049 W. Division).
