Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week:" Southern Star Bombshell Blonde Ale
By Chuck Sudo in Food on Feb 10, 2010 8:00PM
Friday night we ran through most of the menu at The Southern sitting at the bar with six or seven others. Looking for something to drink, one of the others pointed to his beer and said, "Get this." We like a beer can depicting a cowgirl on a red, white and blue rocket as much as the next man. It's very subtle artwork. But what's inside better damn well match the outside.
Southern Star is a Texas-based brewery that packages their beer in cans. The main benefit to this is the reduction of getting a skunky beer, since it isn't being exposed to sunlight. What pours out is a rich blonde ale teeming with Pilsner malt and some slight apricot and berry flavors that complemented a wide array of chef Cary Taylor's cooking. Bombshell Blonde is but one of a very Southern-themed beer menu. Yes, Marcus, the Southern even carries Abita Jockamo IPA.
The Southern isn't the only place that serves Bombshell Blonde. According to Beer Menus Chicago, Quencher's also has it in cans for $4, so pair it with their tater tot pizza.
