On Our Radar: Nosaj Thing And Daedelus

2010_02_10_nosajthing.jpg As new of a venue as it is, Lincoln Hall is already close to the top of our list of best concert venues in the city. With some very forward-thinking booking (run by the guys at Schuba's), Lincoln Hall is bringing in a wide range of acts that span the indie gamut, including La Roux, The xx, Hockey, Efterklang, Fruit Bats, and Fanfarlo. Not to mention they're hosting a couple screenings from CIMM that we're really excited about. In just five days Lincoln Hall adds to their budding image as they host the haunting electronic beats of Nosaj Thing along with Daedelus.

Nosaj Thing (a.k.a. Jason Chung) hails from Los Angeles and released his debut, Drift, in the summer of 2009 to pretty modest acclaim. While Pitchfork landed him a very solid 7.9 for Drift, Nosaj Thing really hasn't taken off like other indie acts that have been blessed with a positive Pitchfork rating. However, his music has been quietly gaining more and more appeal by putting a downtempo spin on things, remixing songs by Drake, The xx, Flying Lotus and others. What's resulted is a modest but powerful body of work that is slowly becoming the freshest and most exciting sound to come out of L.A. in a long time. Nosaj Thing is consistently compared to Flying Lotus, constructing hip-hop/dubstep hybrid beats amidst a wave of moody, analog synth. His tunes are the reflective type, leading the listener into a frame a mind best suited for meditation. His performance at Lincoln Hall next Tuesday is sure to coordinate ever-so-slight head bobbing (with a hint of hip-sway).

Nosaj Thing will be joined fellow L.A.-er Daedelus, an experimental electronic musician who blends countless different genres into a final, funky sound. For those into the classic Warp label sound, or if you just like good downtempo electronic music, Nosaj Thing and Daedelus is more than a safe bet at a paltry $12.

Nosaj Thing is Tuesday, February 16, at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N Lincoln, 11 p.m., $12, all ages
