The Candles is the solo project of Josh Lattanzi, who's best known for a number of recent high profile gigs as a sideman with Albert Hammond Jr., Ben Kweller, The Lemonheads, and Tinted Windows. Lattanzi recently finished recording The Candles' debut Between the Sounds, and it's a collection of pleasant Americana-tinged power-pop in the vein of, well, recent tourmate Evan Dando.

The Candles were just in town last Friday opening for Dando and their songs took on a rough charm when played live. There was an easy interplay between Lattanzi and his compatriots as they belted out each of their little rock-n-boogie tunes. There was an easy swagger to the band's delivery that bolstered Lattanzi's honeyed vocals perfectly, bringing a bit of gritty sunshine into the winter night.

It was a lovely case of us walking in and knowing nothing about a band only to be pleasantly surprised by a solid set that made us bemoan the fact that the band has no plans to swing back through Chicago anytime soon. To make up for it, they've graciously given us the excellent "Here or Gone" to pass on t you until Between The Sounds drop April 13.
