When the Bears made the biggest free agent splash of the NFL offseason by signing Julius Peppers, we figured it was a matter of time before they bid adieu to Alex Brown. That happened earlier today when the team officially released Brown. The defensive end was due $10.5 million over the next two years. Brown spoke to the Tribune, telling them, "I enjoyed my time and I appreciate the Bears for giving me the opportunity to play. The city of Chicago, there wasn't a better place to spend eight years of football. I got to see a lot of highs and lows and had a lot of fun with all of it."
Brown also thinks he has plenty of football left in him: "I believe I can play four or five more years, I mean good years. Shoot, over the last four, five years I have been so close to having the magical number everyone looks for as far as sacks (10). As far as what I have been doing, I'm in my prime still." The Bears had been unable to find a team willing to trade for Brown since his impending release was clearly signaled by the Peppers signing as well as moving Israel Idonije to defensive end.
