Since it began in 2000, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival has been one of the genre's leading showcases of its most legendary and progressive artists. DEMF is distinctfully rooted in techno (after all, it is in Detroit), but in recent years the festival has begun to branch out and include all sorts of electronic music, increasing its stake in the scene.

This year's fest runs May 29-31 and includes A-Trak, Kid Sister, Radio Slave, Claude VonStroke, Hudson Mohawke and Simian Mobile Disco, among others. Smart Bar will also make the trek to DEMF to host an exciting opening party on Friday, May 28 at Majestic Theater. They'll be paying homage to Detroit's lasting impact on electronic music with a night full of techno and tech house, featuring Stimming, Ellen Allien, Patrick Russell, Aran Daniels and Nate Manic. Both Stimming and Ellen Allien are major hitters out of Germany (we loved Ellen Allien's collaboration with Apparat for the album Orchestra of Bubbles), so we're pleased to see Chicago's seminal venue make a splash in the (disputed) birthplace of techno.

Tickets for Smart Bar's event run $12-$20 depending on date of purchase. DEMF three-day passes are a miniscule $40, so we find you'd be hard pressed not to make a weekend trip out of it.
