Over the next couple of weeks, we're going to be testing out a few cocktails from The Modern Mixologist, Tony Abou-Ganim's new cocktail book. Abou-Ganim is one of the fathers of modern mixology, one of the superstars of the cocktail revival and a mentor to many of the best bartenders in the country (including our old friends Jennifer Contraveos and Bridget Albert).

This drink is named after his enigmatic friend Mary who "often speaks with an economy of words, yet relays several layers of intent." Like her, the drink is sophisticated, subtle and adult. It has some complexity, but nothing over-the-top or off-putting. The hint of cherry liquor isn't enough to be cloying, but instead adds a layer of sweetness and tempers the rye. Abou-Ganim suggests (ri)1 whiskey as the base spirit. We love (ri)1, but it's a bit expensive - we also tried the drink with a variety of bourbons and ryes, and each was a little bit different. Try your favorite!

Just For Mary
Adapted from The Modern Mixologist

2 oz. rye whiskey
1/2 oz. Cherry Heering
1/2 oz. Lillet Blanc
2 dashes orange bitters

In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients over ice. Stir until very well chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass (or a lowball glass, like we did).

If you feel ambitious, you can finish the drink with a burnt orange twist and garnish it with a brandied cherry. We drank it straight up and it was great.
