The Morning After: Cubs, Sox On Losing End

By Marcus Gilmer in News on Apr 16, 2010 3:00PM

Yesterday was Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball with teams, managers, and umpires all wearing the number 42 to honor the baseball legend. But neither Chicago team fared too well.

Brewers Belt Cubs
There was no sweep at Wrigley yesterday as the Brewers out-scored the Cubs 8-6 in the final game of their three-game set. Derrek Lee, Marlon Byrd, and Aramis Ramirez all homered for the Cubs over the first six innings as they kept pace with the Brewers, but the bullpen would ultimately lose the game for the Cubs. Carlos Zambrano only pitched five innings, a high pitch count and cramping the culprit, giving up four runs - three earned - and striking out seven. The bullpen combo of Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija, and John Grabow gave up the remaining four runs to the Brewers. While the Cubs have struggled this season, the Astros have struggled more (1-8) and they're next up at Wrigley for a weekend series starting today (1:20 p.m., CSN).

Jays Jump On Sox
It was a rough night for Sox starter Freddy Garcia as the Jays roughed up the Sox 7-3. Garcia was responsible for all seven Blue Jays runs given up over the first four innings as he recorded three complete innings pitched, earning the loss and moving to 0-2 on the year. The bullpen held, but the Sox offense couldn't climb out of the seven-run hole, managing just three runs on homers from Donny Lucy and Alexi Ramirez. The Sox now travel to Cleveland for a three-game weekend set (6:05 p.m., WCIU).

Blackhawks Drop Puck on Playoffs Tonight
Don't forget, the 'Hawks and Predators open their first round playoff series tonight at the United Center (7:30 p.m., CSN)
