Bike to Work Week is coming up June 12 through 18. It's a competition among Chicago businesses to see who can get the most employees to bike to work, or part of the way to work, at least once during the week.

If you already bike to work, it's time to start rallying your coworkers and consider becoming a team leader for the challenge. If you've always been considering biking to work, but haven't gotten around to it yet, it's time to learn how. And if you don't have a bike, but think you live too far from work to bike, it's time to reconsider.

The Active Transportation Alliance has lots of resources. To register, companies need a volunteer team leader to keep track of who biked during the week. There are different categories depending on the type of company and the size - quite a few have already signed up. At the end of the week, the team leader submits the results online (how many employees biked at least once, for at least part of their commute) and the winning company gets a prize. All participants receive bike maps, bike shop discount cards, bike to work guides, and a chance to win other prizes. Registration is free.
