The Morning After: Cubs Finally Win, Sox Walloped

Cubs Bats Wake Up In Win Over Mets
Spurred on by three-RBI nights from Marlon Byrd and, yes, Alfonso Soriano, as well as a good outing from Carlos Silva on the mound, the Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak with last night's 9-3 win over the Mets. Showing a level of hustle that's been missing most of the season, Soriano was able to take advantage of Citi Field's ginormous outfield space and logged three hits, including a triple and a two-run homer. The Mets struck first in the second inning on a solo Rod Barajas homer, but it was the only run Silva would allow over six innings (2-0, 0.95 ERA). The Mets scored a pair of runs in the eighth, but the lead was too big for even the Cubs' bullpen to blow. The two teams tangle one last time tonight (6:10 p.m., WCIU).
Rays Wallop Sox
Tampa Bay lit up the White Sox pitching staff while the offense was silent in the Rays 12-0 romp. Sox starter Mark Buehrle gave up six runs over 4.2 innings pitched while reliever Tony Pena didn't fare much better, allowing four over .2 innings. Offensively, the Sox were held to only four hits. After the game, Ozzie held a rare team meeting after which Gordon Beckham said, "He told us to just come here and play the game like we did when we were kids. Hopefully, that takes the load off of us a little bit, takes the pressure off a little bit. Half the time I feel like we want to do it so bad and it's just not working out. I thought it was good timing, and I'm glad he did what he did." The Sox have lost six of their last eight games but they try to bounce back tonight against Tampa Bay (7:10 p.m., CSN+2).
Don't forget: Both of our playoff squads are in action tonight. The Bulls try to pull out a home win over Cavs (6 p.m., CSN) and the Blackhawks face the Predators (7:30 p.m., CSN+).
