A pair of violent, grisly incidents happened last night on the South Side.

  • 20-month old Cynia Cole (pictured right) was shot in the head last night in an attack that was apparently aimed at the child's father. Cynia and her two sisters were in the back seat of the family car with their father in the driver's seat, parked in front of a house at 640 E. 92nd Pl. in Chatham, where the mother had gone to buy cigarettes. The gunman ran out of a nearby gangway and opened fire on the car, hitting Cynia. The child was taken in "very critical" condition to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital. Police say the mother recognized the shooter; they added that the father has an arrest record and known gang ties and are investigating as to whether or not the shooting was tied to two other recent shootings in the same area.
  • Police recovered a stolen car last night and discovered the bodies of three dead men inside it; CPD Supt. Jody Weis said the men had all been bound and beaten to death "execution style" by severe trauma to the head. The car was found in the 2300 block of West 36th Street, in McKinley Park. Police say they currently have no one in custody.
