The Morning After: Cubs, Sox (Finally) Win

By Marcus Gilmer in News on Apr 24, 2010 3:30PM

Cubs Mug Brewers
The Cubs' bats came alive and they got yet another great start out of Ryan Dempster en route to an 8-1 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee. Fukudome and Tyler Colvin both had home runs in the contest to lead the offensive assault. For once, the Cubs came through with runners on base, smacking 13 total hits, and it paid off with only their second win their last seven games. On the hill, Dempster was efficient, allowing only one run over 7.2 innings; Carlos Marmol pitched the final four outs without allowing a run to help the Cubs cruise in with the win. The Cubs try to continue the winning tonight as Ted Lilly gets his first start of the season (6:10 p.m., WGN).

Sox Walk Off Past Rays
Andruw Jones celebrated his birthday in dramatic fashion: by providing the walk-off home run that powered the Sox to a 7-6 win over the Mariners last night. Jones opened the game with a homer in the bottom of the first; Carlos Quentin and Paul Konerko also provided some power with home runs. The Sox had a 5-2 lead until Putz gave up a grand slam to Jose Lopez. Starter Gavin Floyd had been good up until the seventh, but ultimately finished the game with a no-decision after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing two runs up til he was removed but was credited with five runs overall. Matt Thornton pitched a strong final 2.1 innings for the Sox, striking out five and allowing no hits to earn the win. The teams tussle again this afternoon (3:10 p.m., FOX).
