Cubs Cruise Past Diamondbacks
A day after the Diamondbacks blasted the Cubs 13-5, the Cubs turned the tables on Arizona, getting the offense going and cruising to an 11-5 win. It looked shaky early with the Diamondbacks jumping on top 3-0 in the fourth. Kosuke Fukudome hit a homer in the bottom of the inning but entering the sixth, the Cubs were down 4-2. That's when the dam burst and the Cubs scored nine runs over the next three innings. Alfonso Soriano had a three-run homer and an RBI walk while Geovanny Soto and Marlon Byrd also went deep for the Cubs. Randy Wells gave up five runs over six innings but the offensive explosion was enough to give him his third win of the season. Carlos Silva tries to get his third win, too, win the two teams square off again today (12:05 p.m., WGN).
Sox Fall To Yanks
Paul Konerko continued his power tear but the Sox would blow an early lead in losing to the Yankees 6-4. Konerko hit his 11th homer of the season - a three-run shot - in the top of the first to give the Sox a 3-0 lead. The Sox still held a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Derek Jeter hit a two-run homer to tie it up. The Yankees then scored twice in the seventh and the Sox bats were quiet over the second half of the game allowing the Yankees to secure the win and hand the Sox their third loss in four games. Freddy Garcia gave up four runs over six innings but it was Matt Thornton who took the loss by allowing those runs in the seventh. The Sox will try to bounce back this afternoon as they send the undefeated (3-0) John Danks to the hill (12:05 p.m., CSN).
